Gila Wild & Scenic Legislation Reintroduced!
Senators Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Luján have reintroduced legislation to designate nearly 450 miles of the Gila and San Francisco Rivers as Wild and Scenic.
If passed, the act would prevent the construction of new dams and other major in-stream developments, ensuring the continued availability of clean water, thriving ecosystems, and public access for recreation and traditional uses along designated river segments. Of the approximately 108,014 miles of rivers in New Mexico, a scant 124.3 miles of them are designated as Wild & Scenic—or approximately 1/10th of 1% of the state’s river miles.
