Outdoor rec and the governor
Dear editor,
Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is coming to Silver City today to attend the Outdoor Economic Conference. I’m proud that Silver City was chosen to host this event, and understand why. We get the connection between the health and vigor of our local economy and the proximity of our unique protected public lands. The governor has demonstrated she gets it too, by signing into law the new Office of Outdoor Recreation.
No area in New Mexico has more natural attractions, but few have done less to realize their full potential. Matchless natural beauty, tourism and outdoor recreation are the regional destinies we need to protect and enhance, so this conference could be a turning point.
The governor also deserves praise for her commitment during her election campaign to supporting the permanent protection of the Gila River, and to ending the proposed diversion project. I’m hopeful that while she’s in town, Gov. Lujan Grisham will be making big announcements on both issues.
